Back big infrastructure projects, says Infrastructure Australia
Governments need to keep backing in “game-changing” infrastructure projects such as Sydney’s Metro Northwest rail and Melbourne’s Metro Rail project despite public opposition, Infrastructure Australia chairman Mark Birrell said.
Mr Birrell said these major projects aim to make Australia’s big cities work better as Australia’s population and economy outgrows rival rich nations with “turn up and go” timetable free metro systems in Melbourne, Sydney and eventually Brisbane.
“I’d encourage [people] to keep backing in the large transformational projects that will make the cities more liveable, will make our gateways more efficient. It will have some disruptive elements in the short term but it will pay off mutually in the long run,” Mr Birrell told The Australian Financial Review Deloitte National Infrastructure Summit.
“These are the game changing projects that mean we’ll have “turn up and go” timetable free metro systems in Sydney, Melbourne and eventually Brisbane that will make the cities more liveable, easier to get around and more enjoyable, and it’ll make it easier for business too.
